Mannar Island in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka is an island off the coast of Mannar, linked to the mainland via a causeway and that is also said to have once been connected to India through a chain of limestone shoals called Adam’s Bridge. The island consists of approximately 125 square kilometers of land, the majority of which features large expanses of white sand and palm trees. There are also forests of palmyra palm trees that house several tribes of monkeys near the beach.

Talpe boasts a stunning stretch of white sandy beach that is perfect for unwinding and soaking up the sun. Surrounded by swaying palm trees and crystal-clear waters, Talpe Beach offers a serene atmosphere away from the crowds. Whether you choose to lounge on the sand, take a leisurely stroll along the shore, or indulge in water activities like swimming and snorkeling, this picturesque beach is a haven of tranquility.

Haputale is a town of Badulla District in the Uva Province, Sri Lanka. The area has a rich bio-diversity dense with numerous varieties of flora and fauna. Haputale is surrounded by hills covered with cloud forests and tea plantations. The town has a cooler climate than its surroundings, due to its elevation.The South-West boundary of Uva basin is marked by the Haputale mountain ridges, which continue on to Horton Plains and Adam's Peak to the west.

Sri Lanka has a lot of waterfalls, but Diyaluma Falls is probably the coolest and most attainable one as it’s located only 1,5 hours from the popular mountain village Ella. This makes Diyaluma Falls the perfect day trip from Ella. Diyaluma waterfall is a 220-meter-high waterfall and the second highest waterfall in Sri Lanka. The location is a little off the beaten track, which means many people miss it on their Sri Lanka itinerary. Diyaluma Falls offers astonishing views and some of the best natural infinity pools in the world. I’m incredibly happy I dedicated one day to this adventure, as it’s definitely one of my coolest experiences.

Gartmore Fall is located on the Moray estate on on the shadows of Samanala Range. The waterfall is fed by a stream originating from the Samanala Mountain Range and ends up at the Muskeliya Reservoir at the bottom of the fall. This fall cascades in 3 segments before finally hitting the bottom. Another fall, Sri Pada Falls (also known s Adam’s Peak Falls / Gartmore Falls) lies only few hundred meters away falling on the Maskeliya reservoir in similar fashion. Due to the close proximity of these two falls, some confuse the names of these waterfalls and the Moray Falls is sometimes identified as the Sri Pada Falls.

Anuradhapura, an ancient city nestled in the heart of Sri Lanka's North Central Province, stands as a living testament to the island's rich cultural and historical legacy. At the heart of Anuradhapura's allure lies its spiritual significance. The city embraces the Sri Maha Bodhi, a revered fig tree believed to have sprouted from a cutting of the Bodhi tree in India, under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. This sacred tree, enclosed within a serene garden, draws pilgrims and tourists alike, fostering an atmosphere of tranquility and reverence. Authentic Buddhist traditions, archaeological ruins, lavish palaces, traditional monasteries, and informative museums define the grandeur of Anuradhapura. Even though it is a large town, Anuradhapura gives the feel of being in a village. With its well-preserved cultural sites, ponds, and monuments, Anuradhapura is a well-established tourist attraction in Sri Lanka. Tourists visit this town for a rejuvenating getaway, to seek peace, and to satiate their inquisitiveness.

Coconut Tree Hill in Mirissa is an absolutely stunning destination. It’s one of the best spots to catch a breathtaking sunset, offering panoramic views of the Indian Ocean and the surrounding coastline. The sight of the sun setting over the horizon, framed by the swaying coconut trees, creates a truly magical experience. The location is picturesque and ideal for photos, making it a popular spot for both tourists and locals. The gentle breeze and serene atmosphere add to the charm, making it a perfect place to relax and take in the natural beauty. If you’re in Mirissa, Coconut Tree Hill is definitely a must-visit for its incredible sunset views and tranquil setting.

Baker’s Bend is one of the many amazing viewpoints in the hill country in Sri Lanka. This is a horse-shaped bend inside the Nonpareil Estate on the route to the Nagarak Bungalow. The Nonpareil Estate had been managed by William Baker during the time of British rule. It is said that once his horse slipped and fell off at this bend killing the horse and injuring him. This bend can be reached by travelling 11 km on a rough estate road with sharp bends every few hundred meters. within this 11 km, you will climb over 900 meters. Even though this is a private estate road, it is still possible to travel on this road. At 1530 meters (5000 feet) this viewpoint provides panoramic views towards Balathuduwa, Gommolikanda, Adarakanda mountain range to the left and Samanala and Udawalawe reservoirs to the right on a clear day. Although it is possible to hike to the Great Worlds End at Horton Plains from this route, the land outside the estate belongs to the Horton Plains National Park and it is illegal to enter this area without permission.

Ella is a small town in the Badulla District of Uva Province, Sri Lanka governed by an Urban Council. It is approximately 200 kilometres east of Colombo and is situated at an elevation of 1,041 metres above sea level. The area has a rich bio-diversity, dense with numerous varieties of flora and fauna.

Meemure is a village with a population of about 420 people living in it It is located near the border between Kandy District and Matale District in the Knuckles Mountain Range. Meemure is one of the most remote villages in Sri Lanka with the only access via a 14 km trail from the town of Loolwatte.

The Devil’s Staircase is an almost 14 km route from the Horton Plains road in Ohiya going down through tea estates to Kalupahana on the main A4 road. This route is famous for being a 4WD route with its craggy twists and turns earning its rather frightening name. It is a wonderful hike with breathtaking views of the Southern plains of Sri Lanka and its main attraction, the Bambarakanda falls, the highest waterfall in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka Balloon Rides generally take place in the early morning (because the weather is more stable), and the average distance they cover, in accordance with the wind speed and direction, is anywhere from one to ten miles. The height they at which fly will vary from tree top level – where we enjoy contour flying at low level to several thousand feet up: the perfect vantage point to observe the majesty of Dambulla – Kandalama area.

Reaching the top of Ambuluwawa one can experience the most amazing views which could sometimes be covered by the ongoing mist. However, once the mist clears off the view can be scary and freak out climbers, especially those who have a fear of heights. Do note that hiking Ambuluwawa is not at all dangerous or risky, but it would not be the ideal kind of adventure for those with a fear of heights. Avoid leaning on the railing to capture photographs especially at the top as this is extremely risky and one could easily slip off from here. Ambuluwawa is a relatively easy hike to do which gives you 360 degree views of the surrounding mountains, forests, rivers and towns. It is an area richly diverse, with evergreen forests, blossomed flower plants as well creepers and about 200 different kinds of plants from 80 plant families including a variety of medicinal plants. Ambuluwawa is surrounded by many mountains including Piduruthalagala from the East, Bible Rock (Bathalegala) from the West, Sri Pada (Adam’s Peak) from the South and Knuckles Mountain Range from the North. Apart from these mountains many other mountains are also clearly visible from here and adds to the beauty of the area. These are the Hanthana Mountain Range, Hunnasigiri Mountain and mountain ranges associated with Algalla and Kadugannawa. There is a cool mountain breeze in the area due to this reason. The Ambuluwawa Hill and the adjacent forest is designated as a forest reservation which is named as the Ambuluwawa ICC Forest Reservation. The history of the Ambuluwawa Temple dates back to the 13th century during the reign of King Buwanekabahu IV. It is said that the Ambuluwawa Peak was the center of the Gampola Kingdom during his reign. But there is nothing with historical or archaeological values in here.

Covering an area of over 130,000 hectares, Wilpattu is the largest national park in Sri Lanka. The park has got its name from the tens of floodplain lakes, called 'villus' in Sinhala, and has an astonishing diversity of flora and fauna. It is home to over 30 mammal species, including leopard, sloth bear, Sri Lankan elephant and spotted deer. Also, various wetland bird species such as the pin tail, whistling teal spoonbill, and white ibis can be found in the serene landscapes Wilpattu. Originally, Wilpattu was declared as a wildlife sanctuary in 1905 and designated a National Park in 1938. Before the Civil War, it was one of the most popular parks in Sri Lanka, but in 1985 it was shut down following an attack on its wardens by LTTE cadres. The park was reopened in 2010 and started welcoming visitors again.

Bahirawakanda Buddhist Temple, home to the largest Buddha statue in Kandy, offers visitors a spiritual retreat amidst lush greenery and panoramic views of the city below. Visitors can also explore the temple's rich history through its ancient relics and ornate architecture, immersing themselves in the spiritual heritage of Sri Lanka.

The city of Nuwara Eliya; the so-called ‘Little England’ of Sri Lanka; lies amongst the steep hills and valleys of the Central Highlands. Once an idyllic little town made completely of Colonial era structures; it has now grown its own business centre full of modern buildings; and bustles with tourists both local and otherwise. However, the aura of age lingers within the city; mainly due to some beautifully maintained buildings still standing. Key amongst these is the Nuwara Eliya Post Office. The post office is housed within a beautiful Tudor mansion; complete with spires and a clock tower. The bright orange roofs and red bricked walls of the sprawling building form a colorful contrast with the manicured lawns and perfectly pruned hedges. Constructed in 1894 for the sole purpose of dealing with the mail of the British Colonials at the time; this century-old post office is one of the oldest in the country, whilst also being one of the oldest buildings in Nuwara Eliya. On the 26th of December 1990, the photograph of the post office took central focus with the issuing of a Rs. 10 stamp by Sri Lanka Postal Department in order to commemorate World Postal Day. This brought about an increase in the fame of the Nuwara Eliya Post Office and many started viewing it as an attraction of the city. In 2012 the former living quarters of the post master, on the upper floor of the post office, was converted into tourist accommodation; allowing guests to experience the charm of this old building by staying in it. Those who don’t have the chance to book the accommodation can still visit the post office itself, which is on the ground floor, and purchase one of the pretty postcards available here as souvenirs.

Sri Pada, also known as Adam's Peak, is a prominent mountain located in central Sri Lanka. Standing at 2,243 meters (7,359 feet), it is famous for the "sacred footprint," a 1.8-meter rock formation near its summit, which is venerated by multiple religions. Buddhists believe it to be the footprint of the Buddha, Hindus attribute it to Lord Shiva, and Christians and Muslims associate it with Adam or St. Thomas. The mountain is a major pilgrimage site, with devotees climbing its steps, particularly during the pilgrimage season from December to May, to witness the spectacular sunrise and the unique shadow cast by the peak. Visiting Sripada in the off-season is a incredible experience The tranquility and connection with nature is truly special.

Sri Muthumariamman Temple is a Hindu temple that is situated in Matale. Most of the Tamil people also called this Arulmigu Sri Muthumari Amman Kovil. The place is an honorable place for both Hindu and Buddhist devotees. It is an open place for locals and foreigners, making it a fabulous place to visit in Matale. The Sri Muthumariamman Temple is dedicated to Mariamman, who is believed to be the goddess of rain and fertility. In that name, the prefix ‘Muthu’ means pearl, ‘Mari’ means rain, and ‘Amman’ means mother in Tamil.

Yala National Park is the most famous and most touristic national park in Sri Lanka that a wildlife enthusiast must visit. It is the second largest national park in Sri Lanka with an area of ​​979 square kilometers and it is divided into 5 zones. I was lucky enough to go on safari in the park on nearly 15-20 occasions from all the entrances of Tissa, Katagamuwa and Galge and saw many species of animals including elephants, leopards, bears, crocodiles, deer, wild boars, peacocks and various birds. By visiting the park in the months of July and August when there is less rain, there is a greater opportunity to see a lot of wild animals and around 10 visitor bungalows and camping sites can be pre-booked through the department of wildlife conservation website.

Pasikuda is the pin up of picture postcard beaches thanks to its soft white sand and translucent water. Between May and September, this is the best place in Sri Lanka for a Sri Lankan beach holiday. Most days are cloudless, the ocean is warm, and water clarity is very good which makes it ideal for snorkelling, diving, sailing and a host of other water sports. The curve of Pasikuda bay means that swimming can be enjoyed throughout the year. Pasikuda is a relatively new destination in Sri Lanka.all benefit from generous manicured gardens, wide-open beachfronts and the most surreal ocean views. The original village of Pasikuda with its guesthouses, hawker stalls and fishing boats infuse local flavor to the south of the bay. During the high season, jet skis, kayaks and sailing boats occupy the water.

Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic A visit to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a must when you are in Kandy. The most revered site in Sri Lanka, it is locally known as the Sri Dalada Maligawa and is a place of worship established in the 16th century AD. Situated adjacent to the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy, the shrine overlooks the vast expanse of the Kandy Lake. Preserving the Relic of Buddha in this haven of refuge, it was declared that whoever houses and protects it is automatically given the power to rule the country. The artefact serves as a significant symbol of Sinhalese identity and pride. Everyday thousands of white-clad pilgrims make their way to this hallowed space, bearing lotus blossoms and frangipani for their offerings and prayers, known as pujas. While the tooth stays hidden within a gold casket, visitors and devotees always visit the Temple during puja just to have a look at the well protected inner shrine where it is kept. Annually, during the Esala Perahera procession, the Relic casket gets paraded through the streets atop a male elephant. The 10-day festival is one of the largest Buddhist festivals in the world and the most significant in Sri Lanka. The Temple is best visited in the morning or the evening when the ceremonial offerings and prayers are given. It is essential that you are dressed appropriately, clothes must cover your legs and shoulders and, before entering the holy Temple your shoes must be removed.

Udawalawe National Park is a national park on the boundary of Sabaragamuwa and Uva Provinces in Sri Lanka. The park was created to provide a sanctuary for wild animals displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir on the Walawe River, as well as to protect the catchment of the reservoir. The reserve covers 30,821 hectares (119.00 sq mi) of land area. Before the designation of the national park, the area was used for shifting cultivation (chena farming). The farmers were gradually removed once the national park was declared. The park is 165 kilometres (103 mi) from Colombo. Udawalawe is an important habitat for water birds and Sri Lankan elephants. It is a popular tourist destination and the third-most visited park in the country.

UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sigiriya Rock Fortress, is known as Lion Rock, a private fortress and place of immense stature with a remarkably impressive design. The history of the Fortress reveals a captivating story whereby King Dhatusena of Anuradhapura forced his way to the throne after assassinating his father. Moggallana, the heir that was destined to the throne retreated to India and the King, fearing a revenge attack carved his royal palace and commanding fortress on the summit of this 200m (656ft) high rock for his own protection. Making an appearance in 495 A.D, Moggallana returned from his exile and conquered the King re-instating Anuradhapura as the capital. Sigiriya was used as a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century before being mysteriously abandoned. Climb the Sigiriya Rock Fortress Walk through the landscaped royal gardens, towards the base of the Sigiriya Rock Fortress. These elegantly landscaped gardens, said to be one of the oldest in the world, are dotted with sparkling ponds, pretty water features, cascading fountains, meandering pathways and frescos in the Cobra Hood Cave, a rocky ledge in the shape of a cobra’s hood. The gardens reveal a trio of distinct forms including terraced gardens, cave and boulder gardens and water gardens. A 1200 step climb leads to the Fortress above. On the climb up, a short detour leads to the magnificent fresco gallery with paintings of the king’s maids in waiting and women of the royal court draping flowers on mere mortals. The Mirror Wall displays ancient transcripts that closely match the modern-day Sinhalese language (photography is not allowed here) and was polished to perfection as the king often posed and preened himself as he walked past it. Stop at the caves and platforms on the way up for stunning views and if you do not wish to climb to the top, you can stay in the charming gardens and tour the base of the rock. Climb up late afternoon for magnificent sunset views.

Jaffna is a city on the northern tip of Sri Lanka. Nallur Kandaswamy is a huge Hindu temple with golden arches and an ornate gopuram tower. By the coast, star-shaped Jaffna Fort was built by the Portuguese in the 17th century and later occupied by the Dutch and British. Jaffna Public Library is a symbol of the city’s post-war regeneration. Jaffna Archaeological Museum has Dutch cannons and pre-colonial artifacts.

Located in the hill station known as Ambewela (also fondly called ‘Little New Zealand’) is the famous Ambewela Farm. About 17km away from Nuwara Eliya, the farm seems rather out of place compared to the rest of Sri Lanka. Spanning 150 acres, Ambewela Farm is well-known across the island for its dairy products, even having its own line of products being sold all around the country at various markets. Here, the cows roam free, grazing on the green pastures of the farm, and the sky is almost always crystal blue. With wind turbines dotting the scenery in the distance, the peaceful farm is a great place to visit away from the hustle and bustle of the cities. The farm was actually started with the help of the New Zealand government sometime in the ‘60s, and aside from producing milk, yoghurt, cream, and cheese, the farm is also a popular destination in Nuwara Eliya for foreigners and locals alike. The climate of the region can get rather cool, with annual temperatures capable of dropping below 17°C, but usually, it’s not too cold, but the crisp breezes are sure to lull you into a state of utter relaxation. The farm is usually open from 8.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. every day, but it’s best to call and check if they’re open before you head on over there as they sometimes close down the farm for extended periods.

Blue Beach Island is a beach camping spot in Nilwella, near Dikwella. It is a private island giving amazing views of the sunset in southern Sri Lanka. Many love to camp in the cozy tents here surrounding a blazing campfire. It gives a very unique type of camping experience with the sound of the waves crashing against the shoreline.

Commissioned under the British in the year 1921, the Nine Arch Bridge stands proudly, a testament to the engineering and architectural brilliance of the early 20th century. Ideally placed between the Ella and Demodara railway station, those choosing to walk along the bridge will be presented with scenes of rolling hills and dense jungle to delight in. The Nine Arch Bridge, also known as the ‘Bridge in the Sky’ was constructed by connecting two bog mountains when constructing the Badulla – Colombo railway. This bridge is 300 feet in length, 25 feet in width and 80-100 feet in height. It is one of the best examples of colonial-era railway construction in the country. The Bridge can be reached by travelling 2km on Gotuwala road starting from Halpe Textile centre in Badulla Bandarawela road. The surrounding area has seen a steady increase in tourism due to the bridge’s architectural ingenuity and the profuse greenery in the nearby hillsides. Arguably the best time to venture out would be during when the locomotives come barrelling along and thus it is advisable to check on the train schedule in advance. However, be sure to carry your trusty cam with you so that you might capture every moment that unravels before you.

Nilaveli seaside town is 16 km from Trincomalee District in Eastern Sri Lanka. The town boasts of beautiful waters that are ideal for water sports, snorkelling and scuba diving. The Nilaveli beach road doubles as a boulevard lined up with palm trees called the Nilaveli Beach Road. The seas here are lukewarm as the sun shines to its fullest over Nilaveli. The shallow waters by the shore give a dose of adrenaline as you swim in them. There are hotels and resorts scattered across that are stunningly designed to provide you with the comforts of a luxury stay right across the bay! Pigeon Island and its national park are a famous attraction in Nilaveli. It is one of the two marine national parks of Sri Lanka and has a variety of gorgeous corals. Another sight of religious importance is the Velgam Vehera, a Buddhist temple (also known as Natanar Kovil by the Hindus) and the Sri Lakshmi Narayana Perumal Kovil. These temples are of archaeological importance and have sacred feasts associated with them. The blissful town of Nilaveli provides beautiful greenery, and the warm sea breeze never ceases to welcome people.

Tangalle Beach is the perfect place to go for a peaceful and quiet vacation. The beautiful white sand beach will give you the true vibes of a tropical paradise. The white sands goes on for kilometers at a stretch with bays and beaches on both the north and south sides. The beach offers some of the most spectacular views of the sunset. Though the water is deep blue and pretty, swimming at Tangalle Beach is not suitable as the tides can be quite rough and it can be quite dangerous. The small bay with a sheltering reef, is one of the places that you should definitely visit. The reef catches the bigger waves and it acts like a natural Jacuzzi. The soft sands of the beach also make it an ideal spot for a nice morning run. The best time to visit the Tangalle Beach is during the winter months of November until April. The beach is in the best of its glory during this time. You can also visit this beach in summer during May till October, which is when the beach is very peaceful as not many people visit this place during off season, although the sea might be in rough conditions at this time. There are many things that you can do in Tangalle Beach in Sri Lanka . There are many attractions in and around Tangalle that is worth visiting.

Located in central Sri Lanka, the Rangiri Dambulla Cave Temple is a living Buddhist site that is focused on a series of five cave shrines. Inhabited by forest-dwelling Buddhist monks since the 3rd century BCE, these natural caves have been transformed continuously throughout the historical period into one of the largest and most outstanding Buddhist complexes in the Southern and South Eastern Asian region, showcasing innovative approaches to interior layout and decoration. In keeping with a longstanding tradition associated with living Buddhist ritual practices and continuous royal patronage, the cave shrines underwent several renovation and refurbishing programmes before assuming their present interior forms in the 18th century. The vast internal spaces of the cave shrines are not compartmentalized, but are spatially differentiated by a deliberate and subtle arrangement of polychrome sculpture of exceptional craftsmanship and decorated with brilliant compositions of mural paintings. This spatial hierarchy and purposive interior layout devoid of physical divisions lead the devotees systematically through the spaces from one ritual function to the next. The site is remarkable in the Buddhist world for its association with the continuous tradition of living Buddhist ritual practices and pilgrimage for more than two millennia.

Lipton’s Seat is perhaps the most popular attraction in Haputale. Situated an hour away from Haputale town, Lipton’s Seat is a viewpoint named after the celebrated Thomas Lipton. He was a Scottish businessman who moved to British Ceylon in 1890, where he met James Taylor and together they introduced tea gardens to the country. Prior to Lipton’s arrival, Taylor had attempted to grow coffee on the island, however, the coffee plantations were devastated by a leaf-blight. With Lipton’s help, the two men embarked on a business venture which would outlive their lifetimes. Lipton’s Seat is a popular vantage point, from where Thomas Lipton would sit with a cup of tea in hand and proudly look over his estate. Today, you can still have one of the best views from the lookout, and there is even a life-sized statue of Lipton on a bench to take pictures with! It is recommended that you go early in the morning to avoid the crowds and the late-morning fog. From here you will see one of the most breathtaking views, as the sun rises, the hills turn from a dark blue to vibrant green, the sky transforms into a kaleidoscope of colour from lilac with a burst of pink and orange before finally turning blue… to say this view is beautiful almost seems like an understatement. By noon though, the views get washed over by a blanket of mist, so plan your visit accordingly. This is definitely a must-visit which will be enjoyed by anyone.

Galle is located in the south of Sri Lanka. A journey to the past sees the remnants of a Dutch past at a World Heritage Site. Galle has been the emporium of foreign trade since the dawn of commerce. The Dutch Fort, which has been declared a World Heritage Site, surrounds the older part of the town and is situated on a headland of which three sides overlook the sea. The ramparts of the Fort are over 2.5 km in circumference and provide a pleasant and interesting walk. The historian Sir Emerson Tennant claimed that Galle was the ancient biblical city of Tarshish. This city is said to have traded with King Solomon, the Persians and the Egyptians. In 1505 a Portuguese fleet led by Lorenzo de Almeida heading for the Maldives drifted accidentally into Galle. On hearing a cock crowing (cock means ”Galo” in Portuguese), it is said that they gave the town its name. Another explanation for the name is from the Sinhala name for rock ‘Gala’, plenty of which are found in the harbour area.
